Divergent – Book Review

My review of Divergent

Cover pic taken from Veronica Roth’s website – click here for link.

Right I’m not going to give you a run down of the plot – you can get that directly from the lady herself on the link I’ve just given you above (you can even find a link to the first 100 pages on her blog – be warned you will want to buy it immediately so read it only if you have a kindle or other e-reader and can download the rest immediately or if you are near a good bookstore which is open).

My Goodreads review was (deliberately short because I don’t want to give away spoilers):

I loved this book. I was hooked from the sample and whizzed through it on my kindle. An excellent example of world-building. A building romance and tingling chemistry. A strong female lead, too strong at times and not perfect, which is perfect.

Four….what more can I say!
Dystopian and scary because many aspects could be. I’ve seen the comments criticising the violence and there is a good amount but it has a purpose. Negatives: it ended, next please.

Can you pick a faction? I can’t. Guess I’m divergent too (though according to the Facebook challenge I’m Dauntless! – I have Bungy jumped I suppose).

I have selected the quotes below as my favourites and expanded on why below.

“Peter would probably throw a party if I stopped breathing.
”Well,’ he says, ‘I would only go if there was cake.”
Peter is not a particularly likeable character so it would be unlikely for Tris’ little gang to attend any sort of party he would throw, except, of course, as Veronica truthfully shows us here, the power of cake can be overwhelming, ;o)
“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”
Oh for a world that actually believed in this. There are so many things that seem to stop us doing this but it really is so important.
“A brave man acknowledges the strength of others.”
I love this sentiment that recognises that it is OK to back down from a ‘fight’ graciously. There is something akin to being ‘the better man’ here.
“For a few minutes we kiss, deep in the chasm, with the roar of water all around us. And we rise, hand in hand, I realize that if we had both chosen differently, we might have ended up doing the same thing, in a safer place, in gray clothes instead of black ones.”
If you’ve not read the book you probably won’t quite get this quote but I think this is a beautiful and concrete way to describe the fact that they are soulmates (perfect show not tell here Miss VR).

“Sometimes crying or laughing are the only options left, and laughing feels better right now.”
As a pretty good cryer I do feel sometimes a good blub is necessary but there really is nothing better than a good rib aching belly laugh. This also acknowledges that when times are tough we sometimes laugh when society tells us we should be sad and crying (think very close to the bone, too soon jokes about disasters etc). But this is a coping mechanism otherwise we may just fall into a big chasm of despair.
“Why do people want to pretend that death is sleep? It isn’t. It isn’t.”
Death is one of my personal big phobias and this just resonated with me (and I probably cried whilst reading this). There is death in this book and it is brutal but then death often is.
I have already read this twice and bought and part listened to the audiobook. I think I need to treat myself to another read soon.
On to Insurgent
Now I can’t wait – and I mean this; I am so excited to read the second book in the Trilogy – Insurgent. Especially as a summary synopsis has just appeared linked to on Twitter whilst I have been writing this post – read it here.
I love that it talks about embracing Divergence – this is most certainly a clear parallel with the idea that we should embrace differences to truly move forward. We don’t have to agree on everything – I can see respect coming through as a theme in the next book.
I honestly don’t know if I can wait until May so I may cross my fingers, turn around three times on the spot, blow an eyelash and pray that I get an ARC before then.
Isn’t this cover scrumptious. Again click here for Veronica’s blog post where this pic originated.
On the Facebook page there was a post where people were guessing what the final book in the trilogy would be called. My friend (the new Mrs Woods over here who incidentally was the one who introduced me to Divergent) joked that it would be called Detergent (there’s a funny tumblr post here that parodies this on a mock up cover). I tweeted this to Miss Roth who replied that this was the joke name that her and her agent etc were calling it. Thankfully because Mrs Woods was none too impressed that I’d posted that (sorry Stacey).
My money is on Convergent (not had any comments back on that one) as it fits the Gent theme and would symbolise a coming back together. Now this time I’m sure Stacey won’t mind that together (mostly her) we reckoned that the tagline might be One Choice might Save you. What do you think?
Please share your comments about Divergent with me, I love talking about the book (it’s my new Harry Potter – though I will never say goodbye to ‘him’).
Look forward to the Divergent film Trilogy too.

A-Z of Me

A-Z of Me
Thanks to Michelle of Old Fashioned Mummy who tagged me in this meme from Real Housewife of Suffolk.
Hope you enjoy this insight into me. Michelle has tagged most of our friends – I just pass this on to anyone I know who has a blog and is interested – I’d love you to leave a comment back to your blog if you do decide to take part.
ANORAK…Do you have a sad side?
Um, no! My collection of Harry Potter Memorabilia would not classify itself as sad in any way.

BODY…What physical attribute would you most like to change?
As with most girls I would like to be a lot slimmer than I am. I also have a scar on my forehead that I wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t there but I have got used to that now.

CELEBRITY…Which one would you most like to date and why?
Jensen Ackles as he has beautifully kissable lips, eyes that you can fall into and he is generally lush.

DEBUT …Tell us about your first ever blog post. What made you start blogging?
It was on Aug 24th 2009 and was just ‘Welcome to my blog’. I started the blog to take my writing seriously – still haven’t quite gotten around to that!

ERROR …What’s been your biggest regret?
Hmmm – not having finished a novel…still.

FUNNY – who’s making you laugh?
Sadly despite all attempts not to I still can’t help laughing at my Dad’s awful jokes.
Other than that, finding Miranda, Sarah Millican and Michael McIntyre funny too.

GRAND…If we gave you one right now what would you spend it on?
Like Michelle the sad answer would be on paying off a bit of the mortgage.
Frivolous answer – on a trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (oops – I may have lied on A!)

HOLIDAY… What’s your favourite destination?
I’m not that well travelled tbh and tend to forget most things. But I have really enjoyed both New Zealand and Italy and Florida.

IRRITATE… What’s your most annoying habit?
I am almost certain I have many annoying habits but the one that seems to get commented on most is my nose blowing!

JOKER…Whats your favourite joke {the one that makes you laugh everytime you hear it}?
Hmmmm. Not really a joke but a funny scene in the film Idle Hands where Seth Green holding an electric carving knife says ‘Look at me I’m Leatherface’ and pulls the knife out of the socket – not sure why but I find it entertaining!

KENNEL… Do you have any pets?
No pets. I have had a hamster in the past called Billy Dexter and occasionally have cuddles with the neighbour’s kitten though haven’t seen him for a couple of weeks now. Would like a dog at some point when I can give it the time it needs.

LOVE…Are you single, married, engaged, living with a long term partner?
Single. Looking to change that as soon as I find the right chap.

MEAL… Whats your ultimate starter, main and dessert?
Starter – TGI Friday’s Mushroom Alfredo Garlic mushrooms with Garlic bread – what’s not to love!
Fresh button mushrooms sautéed in garlic butter and served in a creamy spinach Alfredo sauce. Sprinkled with Regato cheese and served with warm toasted garlic ciabatta (taken from TGI Friday’s website)
Main – My sister and my homemade tortilla pizzas with sundried tomato pesto, mushrooms, green peppers and cheeeesssseee (or homemade Aubergine cannelloni)
Dessert – Gooey Chocolate Brownie with mint choc chip Ice-cream from The Antelope in Poole

(If all from same place – Mak’s Garden Chinese – selection of yummy veggie starters, Sea Spicy beancurd and Jasmine Tea for pud – yum – they do takeaway too – minus the tea).

NOW…If you could be anywhere right now where would you be and who with?
I’m a family girl so I reckon in North Wales on Christmas Day at the dinner table with my Mum, Dad, Sister, Nainy, Taidy, Uncle Ian and Auntie Lynda

OFF DUTY…What do you do in your spare time?
Sleep, Watch TV/Films, Read, Write, See Family/Friends. Not enough of any of these! (Perhaps a bit too much Social Media engagement).

PROUD MOMENTS …What are you most proud of?
For some reason I felt very proud of my Open University Graduation Day – it took a number of years to get that degree, I went through a lot personally on the way to getting it and kept going despite it not being something I had to do. I was soooooo happy to get a First.

QUEASY …What turns your stomach?
The smell of coffee early in the morning – I can cope with it at other times and even drink the stuff but not at that time. Reading in the car.

RELAX…How do you relax?
Relax – what’s that then? I’m probably most relaxed when reading I reckon.

SONG…Whats your favourite song of all time?
Tough question – I’m going to go for Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi but I’ll change my mind each time you ask me I’m sure.

TIME …If you could go back in time and relive it again, when would you choose?
I’m struggling with this one as everything I’ve been through has made me who I am today so I’m sure there are a few things I would have preferred not to have done/happened but I wonder which moment would be the one I would do differently. Maybe if there is a moment that would have led me to my soulmate quicker.

UNKNOWN…Tell us something about yourself that no one else knows?
I tend to waffle on about most aspects of my life to someone or another so finding this one difficult. As I’ve not told anyone yet – I have just ordered Bruno Mar’s album!! Sorry nothing too juicy there.

VOCAL…. Who is your favourite artist?
I like too many to pick just one. But the one I’ve been listening to most recently is Carrie Underwood.

WORK….. What is your dream job, and are you doing it now?
Full time writer with a lovely book deal. Sadly no I’m not doing that now. Currently lecturing in Occupational Therapy which is a fair substitute – keeps me busy at least.

XRAY…Any broken bones?
Yes – fractured right radius. I broke it in a car accident. And ouch that was very very painful. Have pins and plates in still, a nice scar and the occasional swelling to irritate.

YIKES…What’s been your most embarrassing moment?
Vastly too many to mention I suspect. Main ones are: dressing into lifeboat outfit at a fun day in 17 secs but then falling backwards as soon as the chaps let go of me. Clapping myself at OU graduation – though I did post that video online.
ZOO…. If you were an animal, which one would you be?
After spending the day at Monkey World today it would have to be some type of primate. I think a Mountain Gorilla they seem to be pretty intelligent and chilled a lot of the time.
